Honolulu, Hawaii----- When the Rainbow Relays track and field meet ended, San Jose State University's Destiny Longmire was a three-time winner and teammates Jennifer Sandoval and Nicole Iloanya, two-time first place finishers as the Spartans won nine of the meet's 19 events.
Longmire, the 2017 Mountain West women's outdoor long jump champion, won her first long jump competition of the current outdoor season and tied her school record 6.15 meters mark to lead a Spartan contingent of four jumpers finishing in the top-seven. She also crossed the finish line first in the 100 at 12.34 and anchored San Jose State's victorious 4x100 meter relay foursome that posted a 47.79 time.
Sandoval backed up her win in the 800 on the meet's opening day with an encore performance in the 1,500. Her winning time in the 1,500 was 4:39.03.
The meet's triple jumper winner on the opening day, Iloanya ran the Spartans' second leg of a makeshift, but winning 4x100 relay team.
"Our 4x100 meter relay team was put together at the last minute," said San Jose State director of track and field Jeff Petersmeyer whose team dealt with rain and relatively cool conditions throughout the meet.
In all, San Jose State had nine first-place finishes in the 15 events it had entries. Nevada and host, Hawaii each had five. Nevada had entries in all 19 events; Hawaii in 17 of the 19 events.
"The events we competed in, we did really, really well. Destiny and Cambree Harbaugh's long jumps in the rain were outstanding. Kolbi (Sims) ran close to a `PR' (personal record) in the 100 hurdles in the rain," Petersmeyer added. "Jenny Sandoval had two victories. We had a lot of good individual performances."
Freshman Lovenie Dantes won for the first time in the outdoor season wearing a San Jose State uniform with her time of 26.26 in the 200 meters.
Jeanette Zambrano rounded out the Spartans' individual event winners taking first in the steeplechase that was shortened from 3,000 to 2,000 meters.
Sophomore Jayla Williams and senior Kelsey Johnson-Upshaw ran the first and third legs, respectively, of San Jose State's winning 4x100 meter relay team to share in the wealth of Spartan victories on the T.C. Ching Athletic Complex track. Dual meet scoring was kept involving the three teams. With nearly twice as many competing athletes, Nevada outscored San Jose State, 107.50 to 75.50. Hawaii edged out the Spartans thanks to a sweep in the pole vault, the final event of the meet.
San Jose State University will divide its team next weekend between the Stanford Invitational and the San Francisco State Distance Carnival. Both meets have races Friday, March 30, and Saturday, March 31.
