Eugene, Ore.----- Ben Campbell's one-over par 72 was the best final-round score for the San Jose State University men's golf team as the Spartans finished eighth in a 16-team field at the Oregon Duck Invitational.
Campbell's 72 consisted of a final-round team-best four birdies, three of them in a row on holes 10 through 12, three bogeys and a double bogey on the par 71, 7,020-yard Eugene Country Club course. Campbell and teammate Sean Talmadge tied for 36th place at 224.
As a team, San Jose State had an 882 total. Liberty and host Oregon tied for first place at 865. Santa Clara and Oregon State tied for third at 869.
"We played tough but we really didn't get it going," said San Jose State University head coach John Kennaday whose team began the final round in seventh place.
Kevin Velo was the top Spartan finisher for medalist honors with a 221, good for a 24th place tie, after his second score of 74 in the three round tournament. Bryce Wortman and Sean Yu tied for 31st at 222. Campbell and Sean Tamadge tied for 36th at 224 in the 88-player field.
"We had five guys finish in the top half of the field. That's definitely a step in the right direction," Kennaday said about the first time since the 2013 Club Glove Western Athletic Conference Championship all five Spartans finished in the top half of all players in the field. Co-champion Liberty joined San Jose State as the only other team with five players in the top-44 of the 88-player field.
"We're taking inventory what this tournament taught us and we'll keep learning."
Oregon's Norman Xiong posted the tournament's lowest 18-hole score, a seven-under par 64, for an 11-under par 202 to edge second-round leader Riley Elmes of LMU by one stroke for medalist honors. Elmes' second consecutive 66 gave him a 203 total.
Before heading all the way home, San Jose State is playing in the 49th edition of The Goodwin hosted by Stanford, Thursday, March 29, through Saturday, March 31, at Harding Park in San Francisco. Thirty teams are entered. There will two waves of tee times off of #1 and #10 each day starting at 7:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. The Spartans' first-round tee time on March 29 is 7:30 a.m. Live scoring will be available at GolfStat.com.
