San Jose, Calif. -- Miyo Kobayashi and Laura Malsert combined to win in doubles and each won a straight-set singles match to power San Jose State University to a 5-0 victory in a non-conference women's tennis win over UC San Diego (UCSD).
The Spartans (10-4) won the all doubles matches to take a 1-0 and captured four straight-set singles matches in the #1, #3, #5 and #6 positions for their 10th team victory.
Playing at #3 doubles for San Jose State, Clara Mantaux and Tamara Culibrk teamed up to defeat Chole Wight and Madison Hale, 6-3. The duo of, Kobayashi and Malsert secured the doubles point for the Spartans after topping UCSD's Chole Wight and Madison Hale, 6-2. Playing At #1 doubles for San Jose State, Sybille Gauvain and Savannah Sendar teamed up to defeat Ashley Chao and Bechy Chou, 6-3.
In singles, playing at the #1-position, Gauvain defeated Chao, 6-2, 6-0. Sendar, playing at #6-position, beat Wight in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Kobayashi, at #3 defeated Alexandra Weil, 6-4,6-2. Malsert, at the #5-position, clinched the match for San Jose State beating Valeria Corral, 6-3, 6-3.
"We got pff to a solid start in doubles which helped us in our singles play. It was a tough match up in singles as they(UCSD) were very consistent in all six spots," said Spartans head coach Chad Skorupka.
San Jose State will conclude a two-day trip to San Diego with a non-conference match against University of San Diego, Wednesday, March 28, starting at 11:00 a.m.
