San Francisco, Calif.----- San Jose State University had its best team score in its third and final round to finish in place at the 49th annual The Goodwin men's golf tournament at TPC Harding Park.
The Spartans posted the lowest team score of the 12 teams in the morning wave with a four-over par 288 for an 868 total for 54 holes. Playing the front side first, San Jose State was on fire as a team at six-under through nine holes, but ran into some difficulties on the back nine.
"We're getting flashes of brilliance and they are happening more and more often. We're gaining traction and we're getting better," said San Jose State men's golf coach John Kennaday, whose team finished six strokes ahead of #16-Southern California. "It's a cool thing to watch.
"We got really close today. (On the front nine) We were playing like we knew what we were doing. We gave a few back on the back nine, but we're getting closer. We've made a lot of progress," Kennaday added.
Ben Campbell turned in the Spartans' best score of the tournament in the final round with a two-under 69. Campbell was four-under after five holes thanks to starting his round with an eagle-2 on the opening hole. He stayed at four-under through 14 holes before back-to-back bogeys left him at 69 and his first sub-70 score of the season.
San Jose State counted Campbell's 69, Kevin Velo's one-over 72, Sean Talmadge's 73 and Sean Yu's 74. Yu finished as the top Spartan on the leaderboard with a one-over 214.
In a field with 11 teams ranked in GolfStat's top-50, #9-Oklahoma finished first with an 828 team total. #11-California was second at 831 ahead of host Stanford at 836.
Norman Xiong of Oregon won medalist honors for the fourth time this season and second tournament this week with a 198. Stanford's Jeffrey Swegle was second at 204.
The Spartans will have a few days to rest and get ready several of these top-ranked teams at the 72nd annual Western Intercollegiate Saturday, April 7, and Sunday, April 8, at the Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz. Play starts at 8:30 a.m. each day with 36 holes on April 7 and 18 more on April 8. There is no admission charge and free parking is on a first-come, first-served basis.
