Complete Stanford Invitational Meet Results
Good Friday turned out to be a great Friday for San Jose State University distance runners Jeanette Zambrano and Jennifer Sandoval in two track and field meets separated by the lower half of San Francisco Bay.
First, Zambrano broke her own school record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:30.69 finishing third in the race at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival held at Chabot College in Hayward, Calif. Her previous record was 10:47.47 set at the 2017 Mt. Sac Relays. Zambrano's new school record in the steeplechase is the #1 in the Mountain West time and #6 nationally according to www.tfrrs.com as of March 30.
Sandoval capped off the record-setting San Jose State women's track and field day with a tenth-place time of 34:03.65 in the 10,000 meters in the Stanford Invitational on the lighted Cobb Track and Angell Field. Sandoval set the previous record of 34:44.17 at last year's Mt. Sac Relays.
"It was her best race to date. She took a risk by committing to the pace and ran like a champ through the finish," said San Jose State University distance coach Brad Wick about Sandoval's record-smashing performance. He also forecasted Sandoval's new school record time will earn her a spot in the NCAA Outdoor Championships West Preliminaries at the end of the season.
Camilla Hanson was the only other San Jose State entry on the first day of two-day the San Francisco State Distance Carnival. Hanson posted a 1500 meters time of 4:46.17.
Earlier in the day at the Stanford Invitational, heptathlete Kolbi Sims was a first-place finisher in the collegiate long jump with a personal best of 5.88 meters. Sims also ran the 100 hurdles in 14.91.
Senior Cambree Harbaugh led the Spartans' long jump contingent in the invitational section of the event with a fifth-place leap of 6.02 meters.
Destiny Longmire added a season-best 12.26 in the 100 meters.
"All in all, we had a solid day, not great, but solid," San Jose State director of track and field Jeff Petersmeyer said about the daylight events at the two meets.
"Jeanette Zambrano ran an outstanding steeplechase today the San Francisco State Distance Carnival. Brittany Brown ran well in the hurdles. Kolibi Sims had an excellent day in the long jump. I thought the long jumpers (Harbaugh, Longmire and Johnson-Upshaw) competed well, too."
The Spartans wrap up their participation in the Stanford Invitational on March 31 with a 4x100 relay team and triple jumpers, Johnson-Upshaw, Harbaugh and Nicole Iloanya.
