San Jose, Calif. -- The San José State University women's tennis team won the doubles point and three singles matches in a 4-0 sweep over the Cal Poly in a non-conference match.
The win for the Spartans (8-2) was their fourth in a row.
Playing at #1 doubles for San Jose State, Sybille Gauvain and Savannah Sendar teamed up to defeat Seriana Saltzen and Molly Reed, 6-1. The duo of Miyo Kobayashi and Laura Malsert secured the doubles point for the Spartans after topping Cal Poly's Abigail Bacharach and Caroline Williams, 6-1.
"We started well in the today's match. We got some important service and return points. In singles, we gave away too many loose points and hence we saw too many tie breakers," said Gauvain.
In singles play, Gauvain, Tamara Culibrk and Savannah Sendar each won their respective matches in straight sets. Playing at the #1-position, Gauvain defeated MacKenzie Worsnop, 6-3, 6-3. Culibrk playing at #2-position beat Seriana Saltzen in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Sendar at the #6-position clinched the match for San Jose State against Claire Bouquet, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1.
"I think after successfully winning doubles point Cal Poly made a comeback. We got a very good start in singles. Sybille and Tamara both won at #1 and #2 in straight sets. Sendar coming at #6 had a tight first set and won 6-1 in the second set which clinched the match for us," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka.
The Spartans are back on the courts on Friday, March 9, for a non-conference match against Sacramento State starting at 12:00 p.m.
