Arevalo Shoots Under Par As Women's Golf Tied For Ninth At Meadow Club Collegiate

Fairfax, Cailf.- Spartan women's golfer Abegail Arevalo finished the first round tied for sixth at one-under 71, and San José State ended the day tied for ninth at the Meadow Club Women's Collegiate, co-hosted by SJSU and San Francisco.

Arevalo made back-to-back birdies on #13 and #14, a bogey on #15 and 15 pars to shoot her 71, her seventh round under par this season. She was one of seven players in the field to shoot under par during the first round.

Alexandra Cooper and Elizabeth Schultz each shot a 76 and are tied for 43rd at four-over par. Cooper made 14 pars and four bogeys during her round. Schultz had three birdies and nine pars on Monday.

Franziska Friedrich and Ysabel Tran each shot a 79 and are tied for 60th. Friedrich made three birdies, while Tran made one birdie and 11 pars.

Playing as an individual, Judith Castro Roldan is tied for 14th at one-over 73. After starting her round with back-to-back birdies, she made 13 pars, two birdies and a bogey. Arielle Caronna is tied for 87th at 15-over 87.

The Spartans shot a 14-over 302 for the first round and are tied with Boston College and California for ninth place. The tournament was shortened to two rounds, after frost Monday morning forced the teams to play just one round.

Washington leads the tournament with a five-under 283, eight shots better than San Francisco and Colorado who are tied for second at 291. Individually, Brittany Fan of Colorado shot a five-under 67 and leads the field by just one shot over Julianne Alvarez of Washington.

Final round action begins Tuesday with 9 a.m. tee times. The Spartans begin play at 10 a.m. with California, Cal Poly and Minnesota.
