Annapolis, Md.----- The San Jose State University women's swimming team had a successful first day at the CSCAA (College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America) National Invitational at the U.S. Naval Academy.
As one of 49 schools in the meet, the Spartans, with eight swimmers, are tied for fifth with South Carolina in the team standings with 91 points. San Jose State was one of four schools with a top-eight finisher in at least four of the five first-day events.
Senior Brittany Heng led the way placing third in the 50 freestyle with a lifetime best 22.70, #3 on the all-time San Jose State list. Heng also swam on the Spartans' 200 freestyle relay team that finished fifth in 1:32.70 and the 400 medley relay quartet that placed fourth with a 3:40.78 time.
Senior Colleen Humel was just as busy as Heng swimming the opening leg in both relays and finishing seventh in the 200 individual medley in a 2:02.32 time. She swam a personal best of 2:01.79 in the morning qualifying round, also the #3-mark all time at San Jose State.
Kate Hanf in the breaststroke and Brenna Bushey in the butterfly joined Humel in the backstroke and Heng in the freestyle in San Jose State's fourth-place 400 medley relay team. Antoinette Loya and Gabby Heng joined Humel and Brittany Heng in the 200 freestyle relay.
"I'm really happy with our performance today in both the individual events and relays," said San Jose State women's swimming head coach Sage Hopkins. "Tomorrow should be another very strong day for us.
"I'm really looking forward to our 200 medley relay along with our three individual races."
The three-day invitational continues with seven events on March 9 and concludes on March 10 with seven more events.
