Complete Day 2 meet results

Annapolis, Md.----- The San Jose State University women's swimming team had another big day at the CSCAA (College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America) National Invitational.

The Spartans set two meet records winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:39.70 and Colleen Humel, San Jose State's leadoff swimmer in the medley relay, came back five events later to finish first in the 100 backstroke clocked in a meet record 52.53 seconds.

HUMMIN' ALONG TO THE VICTORY STAND

Humel had an exceptional day in her specialty -- the backstroke. She was the top qualifier in the 100 back in the morning qualifying swim. In the 200 medley relay, the senior from Chicopee, Mass., had the fastest 50 backstroke time and San Jose State did not relinquish its lead in the race the rest of the way.

"Today meant a lot to me for multiple reasons," said Humel, who had won 20 consecutive backstroke races during the regular season. "There is no better feeling than accomplishing a goal like that with your teammates by your side. I'm so proud of what we have done.

"(On winning the 100 back) It wasn't that I won my race or got a best time. It was that I was able to do all that with my teammates by my side. I would have never been able to do it without them or my parents cheering me on.

"That was my last 100 backstroke race for my San Jose State career and I couldn't be happier with how I finished."

EVERYONE IS CONTRIBUTING

For the second day in a row, the Spartans scored in four events. Junior Brenna Bushey was third in the 100 butterfly and the 800 freestyle relay team of Gabby Heng, Taylor Lehr, Katie McIntee and Kate Hanf was sixth.

"This was a tremendous night of swimming for us, breaking two meet records, winning two events and Brenna medaling in the (100) fly. Along with our 800 relay team of Gabby, Taylor, Katie and Kate, this will go down as one of our best sessions ever," said San Jose State head coach Sage Hopkins whose team is solidly entrenched in fifth place in the team standings with 211 points. The Spartans also are the top scoring Mountain West team heading into the third and final day of competition.

San Jose State took nine swimmers to the CSCAA National Invitational and all of them already have points on the scoreboard for the Spartans in the team standings.

"We have some great events coming up tomorrow (Saturday, March 10) and I am really looking forward to the prelims," said a delighted Hopkins.
