Napa, Calif.- Spartan Franziska Friedrich recorded her fourth top-20 finish of the season, and the San José State women's golf team finished tied for 14th place with Wisconsin Tuesday at the Silverado Showdown.
Friedrich shot a one-over 73 for the second consecutive round and finished the tournament tied for 19th at four-over 220. She started the final round on #13 by making seven consecutive pars before three bogeys, two birdies and a par left her at one-over after 13 holes. Friedrich finished the round with three pars, a birdie and bogey.
"Franzy was very consistent for us all tournament," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "She made some birdies today, and the changes made to her swing really paid off for her."
Abegail Arevalo shot the low round for the Spartans with an even-par 72 and finished tied for 34th at six-over 222. She played the first 15 holes at two-under par, making 13 pars and two birdies. Arevalo finished round with back-to-back bogeys before making her 14th par of the round.
Alexandra Cooper and Ysabel Tran tied for 65th at 14-over230. Cooper make four birdies in the final round, shooting a four-over 76. Tran shot a five-over 75, making two birdies on Tuesday.
Elizabeth Schultz was 77th at 234 and shot her best round of the tournament with a 75 on Tuesday. She made three birdies during the round including two of her final three holes.
San José State finished the tournament by shooting a 296 in the final round to tie Wisconsin at 898 (+34). The Spartans made 14 birdies in the final round and 30 for the tournament.
Southern California won the tournament, shooting five-under par for 54 holes (859) including a six-under 282 in the final round. Jennifer Chang from USC and Patty Tavatanakit of UCLA tied for medalist honors at eight-under 208.
"The result was not what we wanted. This course was set up very hard, shooting five-under for the tournament was very impressive," said Dormann. "We did not play bad. We made too many big mistakes, and that is making it hard for us to be successful. We made birdies on the par-five holes today and need to keep that going into the conference championship next week.
San José State travels to the 2018 Mountain West Championship, April 16-18, at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
