San Jose, Calif. -- The San Jose State University women's tennis team had wins in singles by Sybille Gauvain and Laura Malsert, but was defeated by Fresno State, 4-2, in a Mountain West match at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
The Bulldogs (8-11) took a 1-0 lead into the six singles matches winning at #2 & #1 doubles.
Playing at the No. 6 position, Laura Malsert evened the score, 1-1, with a 6-2, 6-4 straight set win against Georgia Lawson.
The two teams then traded singles points. Jackie Wagner playing at #4-position was beaten in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4 by Juliane Treibe.
On Senior Day, Sybille Gauvain, the team's only senior, again tied the score at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Emma Wilson at #1-singles. Gauvain's victory was her 129th overall and moved her into fifth place on the San Jose State list for career combined singles and doubles wins.
Miyo Kobayashi at #3-position and Tamara Culibrk at #2-position lost their match in straight sets.
"We had a tight match on every single court. I tried to keep my focus and tried to get a point for the team. Even at doubles, one point could have turned the match for us," said the Spartan Sybille Gauvain.
San Jose State's (11-7) next match is Sunday, April 15, when it hosts University of Nevada in a Mountain West match at the Spartan Tennis Complex. First serve is at 12:00 p.m. (PT).
