Women's Water Polo Hosts Nationally-Ranked MPSF Opponents

April 13, 2018

The San Jose State University women's water polo team faces one of its sternest tests of the season hosting #6-Arizona State and #2-USC in a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) matches Friday and Saturday, April 13 and 14, at West Valley College.

The Arizona State match begins at 5:00 p.m. and the conference contest vs. USC starts at 2:00 p.m.

The Spartans (9-14, 0-2 MPSF), ranked tied for #21 in the latest national coaches poll, return to action for the first time since a 13-5 loss at #3-California on March 31. San Jose State seeks its first win of the season against a top-10 ranked opponent. The last time the Spartans knocked off a top-10 team was a 9-7 overtime triumph over #9-UC Santa Barbara in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. Newcomers Guara Garcia Delgado and Lili Urvari continue as the team's top-two scorers with 25 goals each.

Arizona State (14-7, 0-3 MPSF) comes to Northern California with a three-match losing streak, all to MPSF opponents #3-California, #2-USC and #4-UCLA. The Sun Devils have three 30-goal scorers in Maud Koopman (34), Alkistis Benekou (32) and Bente Rogge (32).

USC (18-1, 2-0 MPSF) arguably is the hottest team nationally with an eight match winning streak including an 11-6 win over #3-California. Freshman Paige Hauschild is the MPSF's leading scorer (50 goals). Denise Mammolito (32 goals), Brianna Daboub (27) and Maud Meggens (27) are three more scoring threats for the Trojans.
