Cooper Tied For Second, Women's Golf Fifth After Day One of MW Championship

Rancho Mirage, Calif.-Spartan Alexandra Cooper shot a one-under 71 and is tied for second place after the opening round of the 2018 Mountain West Women's Golf Championship at the Mission Hills Country Club. San José State shot a 300 and ends the day in fifth place.

Cooper is tied for the tournament lead in birdies made with six after shooting her sixth under-par round this season. She made five birdies over the first nine holes and was three-under at the turn. Cooper made one birdie and six pars over her final nine holes.

Abegail Arevalo is tied for 11th place after shooting a two-over 74. She made two birdies and 12 pars during the round, shooting a one-under 35 over her first nine holes.

Franziska Friedrich shot a three-over 75 and is tied for 17th. She started her round with five pars and a birdie on the third hole before back-to-back bogeys and a par left her at one-over 37 through nine holes. Friedrich made two birdies over her final nine holes, but just three pars and four bogeys to finish at 75.

Elizabeth Schultz shot an eight-over 80 and is tied for 37th. Judith Castro Roldan shot an 88 and is 45th.

San José State is fifth at 300, with just 12 shots separating the second through ninth-place teams. UNLV leads the championship with a one-under 287, led by Mackenzie Raim who leads the tournament at two-under 70.

"Alex had a nice round today. She hit a lot of great shots early in her round," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "Obviously, we will need a much better fourth score tomorrow if we are to get back into contention."
