Women's Golf Has Rough Second Round At MW Championship

Rancho Mirage, Calif.-The San José State women's golf team made only three birdies in the second round of the 2018 Mountain West Championships and fell to ninth place in the team standings Tuesday at the Mission Hills Country Club.

San Jose State shot a 315 in the second round and has a two-round total of 615. The Spartans are 11 shots out of sixth place. UNLV leads the tournament at two-over 578.

Elizabeth Schultz shot the low round of the day for SJSU with a four-over 76. She started the round bogey-birdie-then three bogeys before making 12 pars and one bogey over her final 13 holes. She ended the day tied for 31st at 12-over par.

Abegail Arevalo is tied for 18th at +8 (152) after shooting a 78 in the second round. She started the round by making eight pars on her first nine holes. On the back nine, Arevalo made one birdie on the par-four #15 and four other pars, but two bogeys and two double-bogeys found her at 78 to end the day.

Two other Spartans are in the top-25. Alexandra Cooper finished the day tied for 21st at nine-over 153, while Franziska Friedrich is tied for 24th at 10-over 154. After making a bogey on her first hole, Cooper then made nine consecutive pars to be just one-over after 10 holes. She then ran into some trouble on six of her final eight holes that led to her shooting an 82 for the round. Friedrich made 10 pars and birdied the par-five ninth hole as she shot a 79 for the second round.

Judith Castro Roldan made nine pars during the second round, shooting an 84 and is at 172 for the tournament.
