Complete Cardinal Classic Results
For the San Jose State University women's track and field program, there was a school record in track at the Mt. SAC Relays in Torrance, Calif., and a new Spartan mark in the long jump at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Stanford to start the team's weekend competitions.
First, it was sophomore Destiny Longmire breaking her own school record at Stanford in the long jump with a winning mark of 6.20 meters, .05 meters longer than her previous best of 6.15 meters.
Later in the afternoon at the Mt. SAC Relays, sophomore distance runner Jennifer Sandoval overcame a fall in her 5,000-meter race when she was tripped in a pack of runners, but still managed to regain her stride and finish with a 16:35.66 time, .08 seconds faster than the previous mark of 16:35.74 set by Jennifer Beckingham at the 2016 Mt. SAC Relays.
"Jenny put herself in position to have an amazing race, but sometimes, there are events out of your control. Jenny scraped herself up off the track and finished up the last mile," said Spartan distance coach Brad Wick.
"She is more determined than ever to run fast at conference and the first round of nationals."
The long jump was the Spartans' highlight event of the first day of the Cardinal Classic. Besides Longmire's school record, Kolbi Sims had a personal best of 5.90 meters finishing fourth. Cambree Harbaugh, fifth, Brittany Brown, sixth, and Kelsey Johnson-Upshaw, eighth, also finished in the top-10.
"Destiny had a great series of jumps. She looked the best she's looked on a runway all year," said Jeff Petersmeyer, San Jose State's director of track and field. "The entire jump group did pretty well."
Sandoval was just one of three San Jose State distance runners shining at the Mt. SAC Relays. Men's cross country runners Jose Pina and Craig Huff excelled in the 10,000 meters and 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively.
Pina, who qualified for the 2016 NCAA Division I Men's Cross Country Championships, posted a third-place time of 29:25.16 in his heat, good for #4 on the San Jose State all-time list. The 10,000 meters distance was only his second in his career and first this outdoor season.
"Jose ran a gutsy and well executed race. He stuck on the leaders and didn't let them go. He even took the lead with four laps to go in the race," said Wick. "He still has a lot left in the tank for this season and for years to come."
Huff ran a phenomenal steeplechase according to Wick and crossed the finish line in 8:54.39.
Based on last year's NCAA Division I Men's Track and Field Regional Championships qualifying marks, Wick believes Pina and Huff have qualifying marks for the 2018 NCAA West regional meet, May 24-26, in Sacramento.
The Spartans have one more day of events at the Cardinal Classic and the Mt. SAC Relays on April 21.
