Bremerton, Wash.----- San Jose State University sophomore Sean Yu led all players with seven birdies en route to a major college best five-under par 67 to keep the Spartans in contention for the 2018 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship.
Yu played the first four holes of the par 72, 7,115-yard Gold Mountain-Olympic course in even par then finished his opening nine with four birdies and bogey to turn at three-under par for round and one-under for the championship. After a bogey on #10, Yu closed out his final eight holes with birdies on #14, #17 and #18.
"Sean Yu put together one heck of a round today. He putted very well," said San Jose State men's golf coach John Kennaday.
Yu's three-under par 141 total is good for a four-way tie for third place in the 55-player field with teammate Sean Talmadge, first-round leader A.J. Ott of Colorado State and Nevada's Joey Vrizich. Talmadge posted a second-round 73, one of the day's better scores as the field battled cold and wet conditions. Just 13 players had second-round scores of even par or lower compared to 18 in the first round.
"In the conditions he (Talmadge) played in, he played brilliantly. No doubt about it," Kennaday said about Talmadge who was never higher than one-over par on a round with three birdies and four bogeys.
The Spartans needed Yu's 67 and Talmadge's 73. San Jose State also counted Bryce Wortman's 77 and Ben Campbell's 80 for a 297 team score in the second round and 585 total.
"It was just a hard, cold, windy, rainy day. It was hard. There was little or no mercy out there for any type of mistake," said the Spartans coach about the Gold Mountain-Olympic course that played to a 75.25 average score compared to 73.96 in the first round.
San Jose State is in sixth place, but still within reach of team leader UNLV at 573. Colorado State is second at 578. Fresno State and Wyoming are tied for third at 582. Nevada is a stroke ahead of the Spartans in fifth at 585.
UNLV's Shintaro Ban matched Yu's 67 to take the individual lead at 135. Ban had six birdies and a bogey for his 67 and has a four-shot advantage over Nevada's Grant Booth at 139.
The 54-hole championship concludes with 18 holes scheduled for Sunday, April 22.
