San Deigo, Calif. -- The San Jose State University women's tennis team won four singles matches in a 4-3 victory against San Diego State University.
The outcome hinged on the third set of the number-three singles match between San Jose State's Miyo Kobayashi and San Diego State's Jenny Moinard. Kobayashi lost the first set and trailed 3-0 in the second set, but battled back to take the next two sets for a 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 decision and the win for the Spartans. The win was Kobayashi's first three-set singles win since the 2017 Saint Mary's Invitational.
"Miyo comes back to win at #3-singles after being down 6-0, 3-0. Amazing! I am so proud of her and the whole team. I have never seen anything like that in 20 years of coaching," said Spartans' head coach Chad Skorupka.
To start the match, San Diego state took a 1-0 lead by sweeping the first two doubles matches and was ahead 2-0, after Abbie Mulbarger defeated Laura Malsert at #5-singles by 6-0, 6-2.
The Spartans then tied the score with a straight-set singles wins by Sybille Gauvain at #1 and Clara Mantaux at #6-singles.
Gauvain defeated Jana Buth, 6-4, 6-2. Mantaux won against Nnena Nadozie by the same 6-4, 6-2 score.
Trailing 3-2, the Spartans tied the match again. Tamara Culibrk at #2-singles overcame losing the first set to Paola Diaz and came back to win in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The Spartans head to the 2018 Mountain West Women's Tennis Championship in Boise, Idaho, beginning Thursday.
