San Jose, Calif. --- Brett Bautista has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week for his performance against San Francisco and UC Riverside.
"Brett is one of the best hitters that I have ever coached," said interim head coach Brad Sanfilippo. "To have a player with that level of offensive ability in your lineup really makes the offense go. He has got a mature approach, and an excellent work ethic. He is such a great hitter, but continues to work on his game. It gives our offense a lot of confidence to have someone with his type of ability in our lineup."
For the week, Bautista had a batting average of .474, on-base percentage of .524, and slugging percentage of .842.
In the three game road series against UC Riverside, he led Spartans to a 2-1 record. He Batted 8-for-16 (.500) in the three-game series, leading the Spartans with seven RBI, two home runs, 15 total bases, .938 slg%. At Riverside he recorded two three-hit games against the Highlanders.
In game three, Bautista racked up a career-high six RBI with two home runs in back to back innings; one a solo shot with the second being a three-run homer.
The senior's clutch play in game two helped the Spartans to a 5-3 victory against the Highlanders. He broke the 1-1 tie to make it 2-1 when he doubled down the left field line and scored Connor Konishi. He also scored the game-winning run in the 12th inning after a leadoff single to begin the inning.
