San Jose, Calif. --- Aaron Pleschner (3-for-4, 3R, RBI) scored from third on a one out grounder by Kellen Strahm (1-for-4, R, 3RBI, BB) giving San Jose State (17-22, 7-11 MW) a 6-5 comeback victory against New Mexico (15-25-1, 8-14 MW) in the 10 inning Friday night game at Municipal Stadium.
"It's a long game," said interim head coach Brad Sanfilippo. "We kept grinding even though we did not get the start that we wanted. They scored a five spot and certainly had momentum in the third, but our bullpen allowed us to chip away. The game ball tonight goes to the bullpen for pitching seven shutout innings to keep us in the game."
San Jose State started out cold against the Lobos. Jared Mang (1-for-3, R, 2RBI, HR) keyed New Mexico's five run third inning with a two-run homer to left field with one out.
The Spartans were down 0-5 and had one hit heading into their fourth inning.
The Spartans answered with one in the fourth, and back to back two run innings to tie it up 5-5. The team racked up nine hits in the three innings.
In the Spartan's 10th, Pleschner got on base with a single to right field with one out. Brett Bautista (3-for-4) then singled up the middle and advanced Pleschner to third. The junior short stop from Redwood City, California beat the throw from second on the Strahm grounder and slid into home base for the 6-5 Spartan victory.
Fineas Del Bonta-Smith (3-3) earned his second win in extra innings in the last two weeks. He struck out all three batters swinging in the top of the 10th inning to help the Spartans to their third win in a row.
The Spartan bullpen pitched seven straight shutout innings Friday night. Nicholas Morales, Cameron Keup, Zach Wallace, and Justin Watland combined for two strikeouts and one earned run.
