San Jose, Calif. --- Andrew Mitchel's 11 strikeout performance leads San Jose State (18-22, 8-11 MW) to a 5-4 win in game two against New Mexico (15-26-1, 8-15 MW) Saturday afternoon at Municipal Stadium.
"We were aggressive and pushed the tempo with some running and a safety squeeze," said interim head coach Brad Sanfilippo. "We were trying to score early and grab some momentum."
Mitchel improved his record this season to a perfect 5-0 when he matched his career high 11 strikeouts through 7.0 innings. It was the junior's second double digit strikeout performance this season. In his first season as a Spartan, he has racked up 72 strikeouts to 25 walks in 60.2 innings.
The Spartans scored all five runs with contributions from five different players in the lineup. Connor Konishi (1-for-3, R, RBI), Chris Williams (2-for-2, R, RBI, 2BB, SB), Kyle Morrison (1-for-3, RBI), Brett Bautista (2-for-5, R, RBI), and David Campbell (1-for-3, R, RBI, SB) all had hits that scored Spartan runners.
New Mexico scored all four of their runs with two homers off Mitchel. One was a solo shot to left field from Derek Marshall (1-for-3, 2R, RBI), and the other was a three run from Robby Campillo (1-for-4, R, 3RBI).
Fineas Del Bonta-Smith (3-3) picked up his third save of the season. He entered in the ninth inning and retired all three batters he faced.
The Spartans look to complete their first sweep of the season against New Mexico tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. inside Municipal Stadium.
