Davis, Calif. --- The San Jose State baseball team (10-17) was defeated 7-3 in Tuesdays matchup against UC Davis (8-15) at Swimley Field. The Spartans gave up 13 hits in the loss, but three double plays from the defense kept the game within reach.
With two outs in the sixth inning, UC Davis put away four runs that put the Aggies up 7-1 over the Spartans. Tanner Murray (2-for-4, R, 2RBI, BB) singled through the left side and drove home two runners for the Aggies. The next batter in the lineup, Brad Pluschkell (1-for-5, 2RBI), doubled down the left field line for two more RBI's to take the 7-1 lead.
The Spartan offense started the game slow recording one hit through the first five innings, however, the team turned things around in the sixth. Shane Timmons singled through left center with one out to score Connor Konishi (0-for-1, 2BB).
"We just started the game slow, and carried a bit of a hangover from the weekend," said interim head coach Brad Sanfilippo. "Teams go through peaks and valleys. We will get better, and will continue to work hard and improve."
San Jose State recorded seven hits and three runs after the fifth inning.
The Spartans picked up two runs with one out in the eighth to bring the team within four. Timmons singled to left center to drive home Kellen Strahm (1-for-4, R, BB) for his 22nd run of the year. Chris Williams (1-for-3, RBI) singled to center field and scored Brett Bautista (0-for-3, R, BB) to make it 7-3.
Timmons was 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI. He is on a four-game hit streak batting .353 with three doubles in the four-game span.
10 different pitchers saw time on the mound for San José State. Tevin Cadola started the game and threw the most pitches Tuesday afternoon. The junior played 2.0 innings and faced nine batters on the day.
The winning pitcher on the day was Blake Hannah. Hannah threw five innings and allowed just one hit and zero runs.
The Spartans will return home Friday night at 6:00 p.m. (PT) inside Municipal Stadium to take on their conference opponent #20 Nevada.
