Spartan Sprinters Shine At Mountain West Challenge Track & Field Meet

April 6, 2018

San Diego, Calif.----- It was a day of highlights for the San Jose State University sprinters at the Mountain West Challenge women's track and field meet at the Aztrack Sports Deck.

"We did really well in the sprint events with a lot of personal bests. That was real encouraging. I thought the jumpers competed well. The day really belonged to the Spartans in the sprint events," said Jeff Petersmeyer, San Jose State University's director of track and field.

"We're seeing results (in the sprints) lowering their `PR's' a little bit here and a little bit there. So, that's all you can ask for."

The Spartans 4x100 meter relay team of Jayla Williams, Brittany Brown, Kelsey Johnson-Upshaw and Destiny Longmire finished third with a 46.72 time, just .04 off the school record of 46.68.

The 4x400 meter relay team of Kolbi Sims, Lovenie Dantes, Diaond Tabron and Natalie Gutierrez record a time in the 3:53.60, also the second best time in school history and more than four seconds faster than the Spartans' first 4x400 time of 3:57.89 at the March 24 Rainbow Relays.

It was a big day for Dantes, a freshman from Fairfield, Calif. She and Kolbi Sims competed in three events. For Dantes, she was fourth in the 400 with a personal best 56.06 and eighth in the 200 at 24.96, more than a second faster than her first 200 of the outdoor season at the Rainbow Relays.

"She had a great week of practice. She had a lot of confidence based on this week's practice that she could go out hard in the 400 and keep it together and run really well and she did just that. Same thing in the 200,"Petersmeyer said about Dantes. "Her first 200 of her 400 today was faster than her lifetime best in the open 200. She's coming around nicely and her 4x400 leg in the relay was outstanding."

Sims tied for fifth with Natalie Gutierrez in the high jump at 1.60 meters, was sixth in the long jump and ran the first leg of the 4x400 meter relay.

Petersmeyer also had high praise for freshman Jayla Williams whose time in the 100 hurdles went down for the third week in a row to a career best 14.42 and was good for third place.

"I was really happy with Jayla Williams in the hurdles. I was waiting for that because I thought she could have a really good time and today she put it all together and ran a really good race in front of her hometown family. It was a good homecoming for her," Petersmeyer said.

Longmire had the team's highest individual event finish with her second-place leap in the long jump. Her best mark of the day, 6.14 meters, was .01 meters off her lifetime best of 6.15 meters.

San Jose State returns to action the weekend of April 20. Selected Spartans could be headed to the Mt. SAC Relays. Others will be at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Stanford.
