Logan, Utah - After a 12-hit and eight-run attack in an 8-4 victory on Friday, the San José State softball team managed just four hits and two runs in a 3-2 loss to the Utah State Aggies on Saturday afternoon
As in Friday's game, the Spartans (31-16, 15-7 MW) scored two in the top of the first inning.
With two outs, Cassidy Clark (0-for-1, R, 2BB, SB) walked and then stole second. Madison Aurin (1-for-3, R, RBI, 3B) tripled to right center plating Clark. Kaelin Amrein (1-for-3, RBI) followed Aurin with a single up the middle to make it 2-0.
With a pair of two-out hits in both the second and third, the Aggies had chances to score early. However, in the second they got greedy and tried to score from second on a single to center. Brittany Abacherli fielded the hit and threw a frozen rope to catcher Alyssa Avila to cut the runner down at the plate. In the third, Spartans' starter Caroline Bowman got out of the inning on a long fly ball to the fence in right center.
Utah State (18-30, 7-13 MW) pitcher Delaney Hull (9-8) gave up the two hits and two runs in the first, but from that point on allowed just two more hits on her way to the complete game win.
In the fourth the Aggies got a leadoff single, a hit-by-pitch and walk to load the bases. They then got a two-RBI single from Amee Aarhus to tie the game. Bowman induced a 6-4-3 double play and a ground out to get out of the inning with the game tied 2-2.
The score remained 2-2 until the bottom of the seventh when the Aggies put runners on the corners with a leadoff single, a sacrifice bunt, a walk and a flyout. Aarhus then singled to left to plate the winning run.
The Spartans other two hits in the game were singles from Georgia Blair in the second and Desiree Reyes in the fourth.
Utah State banged out 12 hits off Bowman and Aurin (15-12). Bowman pitched 4.0 innings scattering seven hits and giving up two runs; one earned. She walked one and struck out three. Aurin went the last two innings giving up five hits, a run, a walk and she struck out one.
The teams play the final game of the weekend series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. (MT).
