San Jose, Calif. --- The San Jose State University baseball team (22-27, 12-14 MW) lost both games of the doubleheader against San Diego State (35-16, 17-9 MW) Saturday at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Shane Timmons continues to climb the San Jose State record books with five regular season games left to play.
The Spartans are fourth place in the Mountain West, half a game behind UNLV in third. Air Force is a game behind the Spartans in fifth, and Fresno State is two games behind SJSU. The top four teams qualify for the Mountain West tournament.
Game 1: The Spartans lost 2-1 in a pitcher's duel between Andrew Mitchel (6-1) and San Diego State's Justin Goossen-Brown (5-2). Both pitchers threw six shutout innings until the seventh, when the Aztecs put up two runs on Mitchel.
Mitchel allowed one earned run and pitched 7.0 innings with four strikeouts. The junior received his first loss of the season in the contest.
Brown nearly pitched nine shutout innings against the Spartans until Timmons (1-for-4, R, RBI) hit a solo shot over the left field wall with two outs in the ninth for his seventh homer of the year. The home run came on Timmons' 689th career at bat that tied Kyle Bellows for 10th in all time at-bats.
Timmons' is now tied with John Fagan as San Jose State's all-time home runs leader with 25. His 134 career RBI's put him just three behind second place Brandon Macchi at 137.
Game 2: The Spartans lost 16-4 to the Aztecs in game two of the doubleheader.
The Spartans tied it up 3-3 in the fourth with a three-run bomb from Johnny Mendoza (2-for-4, R, 4RBI, HR). The sophomore catcher hit his first career home run over the left center wall with two outs to plate David Campbell (2-for-4, R) and Timmons (1-for-2, 2R, BB).
In the series against the Aztecs, Mendoza has a go-ahead two-RBI single and a game-tying three-run homer.
The winning pitcher was Garret Hill (7-2). Hill notched his seventh win of the season striking out five batters and allowing four runs in 6.0 innings. Relief pitcher Adrian Mardueno faced eight batters and struck out five of them in 2.0 innings.
The Spartans will wrap up the series against San Diego State tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. inside Tony Gwynn Stadium.
