Clovis, Calif.----- San Jose State University senior Nicole Iloanya school record triple jump was one of two Spartan records on the final day of the 2018 Mountain West Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
On her fifth of six jumps, Iloanya was credited with a mark of 12.96 meters, 0.10 meters farther than her previous school record of 12.86 meters at the 2016 Bulldog Invitational, and briefly was in first place despite fouling on her first two attempts. The Arlington, Texas native became the second San Jose State competitor to leave Veterans Stadium with a second-place medal at the conference meet.
"Great athletes always come through in the clutch. She (Nicole) put herself in a hole with her first two (foul) jumps. She got herself a legal jump in the third round and then a really good jump to take the lead for a little bit and then settled for second," said San Jose State University Director of Track and Field Jeff Petersmeyer, whose team produced three school records in the 21 contested events.
Wyoming's Ja'la Henderson, who led from the first round with a 12.86 meters mark, answered Iloanya's best with a 13.37 leap on her fifth attempt to regain a lead that she did not relinquish in the sixth and final round.
Illoanya was one of three Spartans to score points in the triple jump. Brittany Brown was fourth with a lifetime best of 12.42 meters and senior Cambree Harbaugh, the 2018 Mountain West indoor long jump champion, was fifth at 12.33.
San Jose State closed out the 2018 Mountain West Championship with a school record in the 4x400 relay. The foursome of Lovenie Dantes, Kolbi Sims, Natalie Gutierrez and Mountain West outdoor long jump champion Destiny Longmire posted a 3:49.16 time to finish seventh. The previous San Jose State best was 3:51.16 at the 2015 conference meet.
The Spartans finished as a team in ninth place out of 11 with a school record 55 points. San Jose State scored 17 points each in the long jump on Friday paced by Longmire successfully defending her title and in the triple jump with the Spartans placing two (Iloanya), four (Brown) and five (Harbaugh). San Diego State won the team championship with 120.5 points.
"It's the most points we've scored by a lot and it's definitely our highest finish. So, each year, we're trying to get a little bit better, get up there and compete for a title eventually," Petersmeyer said. In four previous Mountain West Championships, the Spartans best point total was 33 and the team finished 11th out of 11 teams each year.
Sims, second in the Mountain West heptathlon, added to the team and her individual point total by finishing fifth in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.17. Brown, the busiest San Jose State competitor on the last day of the four-day meet and #4-qualifier in the preliminary heats on May 11, was disqualified in the 100-meter hurdles due to a false start. Brown also ran the third leg of the Spartans' fifth-place 4x100 relay team.
"I thought Kolbi stepped up well in the 100 hurdles after Brittany false started. Kolbi qualified ninth and needed to beat one person just to score a point and she ended up fifth. I was real happy about that," Petersmeyer said.
Jennifer Sandoval, San Jose State's school record holder in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, only raced in the 5,000 at the Mountain West Championship. She placed sixth with a 16:35.94 time, just shy of her best of 16:35.66 at the 2018 Mt. SAC Relays.
The Spartans also finished fifth in the 4x100 relay with a 46.92 clocking, the third-best mark in San Jose State's five-year history of the program.
