Six Spartans Heading To NCAA Track & Field West Preliminary Championships

May 23, 2018

A school record six San Jose State University women's track and field athletes begin their journey to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., May 24-26, at the West Preliminary Championships.

An emerging program finishing its fifth season, the Spartans' entries are across the board with long jumpers Cambree Harbaugh and 2018 Mountain West champion Destiny Longmire, 2018 Mountain West runner-up in the triple jump Nicole Iloanya, 100-meter hurdler Brittany Brown, steeplechase specialist Jeanette Zambrano and 10,000 meter runner Jennifer Sandoval.

Each Spartan seeks to finish in the top-12 in their respective events and earn the opportunity to advance and compete in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 6-9, in Eugene Ore.

A senior from Meridian, Idaho, Harbaugh becomes the first San Jose State female athlete to compete in four years of NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships competition. Heading into her fourth NCAA West Preliminary Round outdoor long jump competition, Harbaugh was 28th as a freshman in 2015, 40th in 2016 and 33rd last year. She has a season best of 6.06 meters.

Longmire, a sophomore from Moreno Valley, Calif., was 24th at last year's NCAA West Preliminary Round. She has a season best 6.20 meters mark and a wind-aided mark of 6.24 meters.

Iloanya, a senior from Arlington, Texas, returns to NCAA Championship action for the first time sinc her freshman season in 2015 when she was 31st in the triple jump. Iloanya is coming off her lifetime best of 12.96 meters for her second-place finish at the Mountain West Championships.

Brown, a junior from Pittsburg, Calif., posted her season best of 13.47 in the 100-meter hurdles at the Bulldog Invitational in Fresno, Calif., on April 28. She is making her first trip to the preliminary round meet.

Zambrano, a junior from Garden Grove, Calif., bettered her school record in the steeplechase early in the outdoor season with a 10:30.69 at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival in Hayward, Calif. She is in NCAA Championship competition for the first time.

Sandoval, a sophomore from Fontana, Calif., is the fourth Spartan returning to NCAA Championship action. The school record holder in the 10,000 posted her career best of 34:03.65 running in the event for the first time at the Stanford Invitational in late March.

Overall, there will be eight Spartans competing in the meet. On the men's side, Craig Huff will be racing in the men's 3000 meter steeplechase and Jose Pina is running in the 10,000 meters.
