Freshmen Are Bright Lights In 11-2 Loss To UNLV

Las Vegas, Calif. --- The San Jose State baseball team (19-24, 9-12 MW) lost, 11-2, to the UNLV Rebels (30-17, 11-11 MW) in game one Friday night at Earl Wilson Stadium.

The Spartans gave up a five-run inning in the bottom of the sixth and faced a 9-0 deficit.

In the top of the seventh, Connor Konishi (3-for-3, RBI) singled to right center with one out and drove home Ruben Ibarra (2-for-4, R) from second base. It was the first run of Ibarra scored in his Spartan career.

The second run of the night came from Sawyer Pittman (1-for-1, RBI) in the eighth when he singled to left field with one out to score Kellen Strahm (1-for-3, R, BB).

First-year Spartans went 8-for-11 (.727), R, 2RBI. The team notched 12 hits, but scored just two runs on the day.

The winning pitcher was Alan Strong who allowed one earned run and induced four double plays.

Jake Swiech (2-3) was charged with the loss for San Jose State. Swiech started the game and was charged with six runs on seven hits in four-plus innings. Of the four Spartan pitchers, Cameron Keup was the only one to not allow a run. He was San Jose State's third pitcher in the fifth inning and retired the three batters he faced.

The SJSU baseball team returns to action tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. inside Earl Wilson Stadium.
