San Francisco, Calif.-On a par day, San José State women's golfer Abegail Arevalo made 15 pars in the first round of the NCAA San Francisco Regional and finished the day tied for 33rd at one-over 73 at TPC Harding Park.
Arevalo was one of seven golfers in the field to make 15 pars during her round on Monday. Starting her round on #10, she began the day with pars on her first two holes and seven of the first nine holes. Her only blemishes on her card came on the par-five #12 and par-four #18 as she bogeyed those two holes.
Beginning her final nine holes, Arevalo made a birdie on the par-four #1, before finishing the round with eight straight pars.
"Abby had a round of 'oh so close' today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "She has been very steady in her ball striking and only missed two fairways and three greens during her round. She had lots of putts from 20-30 feet that looked good but didn't go in. She will need to play the par-five holes better in the next two rounds."
Of the six individuals playing at the regional, Arevalo is the top finisher at 73. Ingrid Gutierrez from New Mexico is just one shot back at 74.
Top-ranked UCLA leads the team standings with an eight-under 280 in the first round, four shots better than Kent State and Colorado. Individually, three players are tied for the lead at six-under 66 â€" Andrea Lee from Stanford, Brittany Fan from Colorado and Mariel Galdiano from UCLA.
Arevalo begins her second round Tuesday at 8:50 a.m., with Gutierrez and Alivia Brown of Washington State. Fans can follow live scoring at http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=player&tid=14122
