Arevalo Shoots Even Par, Moves to 24th at NCAA San Francisco Regional

May 8, 2018

San Francisco, Calif.-Par was popular again on Tuesday for San José State women's golfer Abegail Arevalo as she shot an even-par 72 in the second round of the NCAA San Francisco Regional at TPC Harding Park.

Arevalo is now tied for 24th at one-over 145. She is trying to be one of the top-three individuals (not on an advancing team) to make it to the 2018 NCAA Women's Golf Championship, May 18-23, in Stillwater, Okla. Arevalo is currently behind 11 players not on teams in the top six on the leaderboard. She is five shots behind leader, Hira Naveed of Pepperdine, who shot a five-under 67 in the second round to take the individual lead.

Arevalo started the round with five consecutive pars before reaching the par-four, 390-yard #6. She made the first of her two birdies on the day as she hit a hybrid from 165 into the wind that left her a 25-foot, downhill, right to left putt that she sank. Arevalo went to one-under par but bogeyed two holes later to drop back to even par.

After three more pars made, Arevalo again went to one-under par with her second birdie on the par-five #12. She hit a good drive, followed by a 3-wood to 90 yards, a gap wedge to nine feet and sank the birdie putt. But, three holes later, Arevalo recorded her second bogey of the day on the par-four, 380-yard #15. She had a 15-foot put for par but missed and fell back to even par.

Arevalo finished the day with three more pars made, making 14 pars on the day and 29 for the tournament, tying with two others for the second-most made by a player in the tournament.

"Abby made some nice up-and-downs on a few holes including her final two holes to finish the round. Her ball striking was not as good today, but her short game was great. She needs to put all the parts together tomorrow," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.

Final round action for Arevalo begins at 8:50 a.m. off the first hole at TPC Harding Park. She will play with Ingrid Gutierrez from New Mexico and Samantha Hutchinson from UC Davis. Fans can follow live scoring at http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=player&tid=14122
