Clovis, Calif.----- San Jose State University's Kolbi Sims posted career best point totals in the shot put and 200 meters and matched a career best in 100 hurdles on the first day of the heptathlon at the 2018 Mountain West Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

One of 12 entered in the two-day, seven-event competition at Veterans Stadium, Sims has 3,194 points and is in sixth place among the 12 entrants from eight schools.

Sims accumulated her biggest point total in the 100 hurdles with 946 points thanks to a 14.23 time. She closed the evening with a wind-aided 24.95 in the 200, which was second overall and good for 891 points. Her 100 hurdles clocking equaled a season mark.

Her 11.57-meter throw in the shot put was fourth overall yielding 633 points. Sims cleared 1.53, 1,56 and 1.59 meters to match a personal best in the high jump for 724 points before missing three times at 1.62 meters.

"Her shot put was a huge `PR.' She tied her `PR' in the hurdles and had a wind-aided personal best (in the 200) that will count as a heptathlon best because of the points (system)," said San Jose State University director of track and field Jeff Petersmeyer who described conditions as warm and breezy.

"All in all it was a really great day (for Sims)."

Fresno State's Jestena Mattson leads the field with 3,332 points. Only 65 points separate second place Asia Smith of San Diego State from sixth-place Sims.

The heptathlon field wraps up action with the long jump, javelin throw and 800 meters on May 10.

"Our conference (the Mountain West) is loaded in the heptathlon and it's really close right now. You can go out there tomorrow (Thursday) and break all kinds of personal bests and still be (finish) like sixth or seventh. We'll have to see how everything falls into place, Petersmeyer projected. "It could really well for us and that's what we are hoping."

The individual events also begin on May 10 with the 10,000-meter run. Junior Carmen Contreras of San Jose State is running her first 10,000 of the season. Sophomore Jennifer Sandoval, the school record holder in the event, is only running the 5,000 meters on Saturday, May 12.
