Current San José State associate women's golf coach Dana Dormann earned medalist honors by shooting a three-under 68 on Tuesday and qualified to play at the U.S. Senior Women's Open next month.
Dormann won the qualifying event by five strokes on the par-71 Ocean Course at Olympic Club. She made five birdies and two bogeys during her round and had a very familiar name to women's golf enthusiasts on the bag for her round – Kay Cockerill.
"I have been preparing for this event, and it feels great to play well! John (Dormann) gave me something to focus on yesterday, and it really helped. My good friend, Kay Cockerill, caddied for me. She is an Olympic Club member and was a great resource for me. I am very excited to be playing in the inaugural U.S. Senior Women's Open," said Dormann.
The Inaugural U.S. Senior Women's Open will be held July 12-15, at the Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Ill. FS1 will have coverage of Saturday and Sunday's round from 1-3:00 p.m. PDT.
Dormann is no stranger to USGA events as she played in 14 U.S. Women's Open Championships. She was one of five Spartan All-Americans to make the cut at the 2006 U.S. Women's Open.
A member of the Spartan golf team from 1985-88, Dormann was a three-time All-American at San José State and a member of the Spartans' 1987 NCAA Championship team. She played nine years on the LPGA tour, winning the 1992 Las Vegas LPGA International and the 1993 McCall's LPGA Classic. Dormann is a member of the San José State Sports Hall of Fame and the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame.
