San Jose, Calif. --- Andrew Mitchel earned ABCA/Rawlings West All-Region honors for the 2018 season. The San José State University left-hander from Atwater, California earned second team honors and was one of nine starting pitchers in the west region (CA, OR, WA, NV, AZ, HI, UT) to be named to the All-Region team.
"This honor means a lot to me," said Mitchel. "Hard work does pay off, and I couldn't be any more appreciative of receiving this."
Mitchel was the 2018 Mountain West Co-Pitcher of the Year. He also earned First Team All-Mountain West honors and a spot on the MW All-Tournament team.
In his first season at San José State, the junior became the first Spartan in 14 years to eclipse 100 strikeouts in a single season. He ranked first in the MW in strikeouts-per-nine-innings at 10.45 and was second in the conference in strikeouts with 101.
He was third in the MW and led the Spartans in opposing batting average at .218 with 18 appearances and 13 starts. He led the SJSU with 87.0 innings and gave up less than a hit per inning and recorded a 6-2 win-loss record.
"I couldn't have accomplished anything this season without my family's support. They followed my team around anywhere we went to watch us play, and I am very thankful for them. My team was huge for me this year, and I wouldn't have wanted to play with any other group of guys of coaches."
"I faced some early struggles in the season, but the coaching staff showed a lot of faith in me and kept me going. I couldn't have accomplished anything this season on my own."
