Las Vegas, Nev.----- Even with all of its ball primary handlers returning on offense and a veteran group of defensive linemen, San Jose State University was picked to finish sixth in the Mountain West's Pacific Division by a panel of media members first announced at the conference's annual "Football Summit."
The Spartans trailed defending West Division champion Fresno State, San Diego State, UNLV, Nevada and Hawai'i in the poll.
Overall, San Jose State has 14 returning starters and 40 overall returning letterwinners on a youthful team that has 66 freshmen and sophomores on its tentative opening fall camp roster seeking as much playing time as possible.
This season, the Spartans play each of the five teams ahead of them in media poll and Mountain Division members Utah State and Wyoming on the road and Colorado State at home.
Boise State was a unanimous choice to finish first in the Mountain Division. The Broncos were named first on all 22 ballots cast. Wyoming, Colorado State, Utah State, Air Force and New Mexico were named in that order.
San Jose State resumes its quest for a higher conference finish, Wednesday, August 1, with the first day of fall practice starting at 9:45 a.m. The Spartans open the season hosting UC Davis, Thursday, August 30, in CEFCU Stadium at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for home games are available at www.sjsuspartans.com.
