Tempe, Ariz.----- The San Jose State University women's tennis program concluded the 2017-18 school year with another season of Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) team and individual academic awards.
For the seventh consecutive year, the Spartans earned an ITA team academic award for a cumulative team grade-point average above 3.20 on a 4.00 scale.
Individually, six San Jose State student-athletes were named a 2018 ITA Scholar-Athlete for being enrolled at the university for at least two semesters and earning at least a 3.50 grade-point average during the academic year and a letter award for the season.
"I'm very proud of this team being recognized by the ITA for its academic accomplishments. To excel on the court and in the classroom will open many doors both professionally and athletically for our players when they graduate from San Jose State University," said Spartans' head coach Chad Skorupka.
Sybille Gauvain, who graduated with cum laude academic honors; junior Miyo Kobayashi; sophomore Clara Mantaux; and freshmen Laura Malsert, Savannah Sendar and Jacqueline Wagner were named ITA Scholar-Athletes. Gauvain recently accepted an invitation to play in the Women's Tennis Association's (WTA) Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic qualifying tournament, July 28 and 29, at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
With this year's award winners, the Spartans now have 27 ITA Scholar-Athlete Awards in the last five years. San Jose State is one of four Mountain West institutions to earn the team award every year since 2014.
Previously for the 2017-18 academic year, six Spartans were named Mountain West Scholar-Athletes; all seven team members were honored with an Academic All-Mountain West award; women's tennis was recognized as San Jose State's top female team for cumulative team grade-point average at the athletics department's 2018 SAMMY awards; and three were named San Jose State University Dean's Scholars at the University's 56th annual Honors Convocation.
