Norfolk, Va.-----San Jose State university women's swimmers Gabby Heng and Colleen Humel and divers Kylie Fonseca, Cari Reiswig and Natasha Sondeno were named to the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America team.
To qualify, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.50 grade-point average on a 4.00 scale and compete at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships or produce a NCAA Championship B-cut qualifying mark during the season.
All five Spartans were named honorable mention award recipients.
"I am so proud of these five Spartans who epitomize the term `student athlete.' They have done a great job achieving both outstanding marks academically as well as national level performances in the pool and on the diving boards," said San Jose State University women's swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins.
Two seniors, Reiswig, the San Jose State University school record holder in all three diving events, and Humel, who has the Spartans' best marks in every backstroke race, each earned their fourth honor as a Scholar All-America student-athlete.
Fonseca, a senior diver, earned her second award. Heng, a senior freestyle sprint specialist, and Sondeno, a sophomore diver, were first-time award winners.
"Congratulations to our Spartans that earned this honor for outstanding academic performance and athletics achievements, said Eileen Daley, San Jose State University's senior associate athletics director for academics and student support services. "These five young ladies demonstrated one can be successful at a high-level academically and athletically."
Recently, San Jose State was honored as a CSCAA Scholar All-America team for the 11th consecutive semester. In the last four years, San Jose State women's swimmers and divers earned 15 CSCAA Scholar All-America individual awards.
