Charles is a multi-talented player who is the Spartans' top returning pass receiver. Pauley heads into the 2002 season as the new single-game school record holder in all-purpose running with 355 yards in the Nevada win. His 355 all-purpose yards was
Pauley ranked among the WAC's top-10 in all-purpose running (7th) and kickoff returns (6th). He handled the ball 100 times either rushing, passing, receiving and/or returning kicks and had 15 plays of 25 yards or more in 2001. The Spartan pass receiver caught at least one pass in 10 of the team's 12 games and had a pair of 100-plus yard receiving games as he finished with 41 receptions for 669 yards and one touchdown. His seven
receptions for 201 yards and a touchdown against Nevada were his single-game bests. The Nevada game marked the first time in school history two different Spartans, Pauley and Edell Shepherd, had at least 200 receiving yards in the same game. A threat to run or throw out of the quarterback position, Pauley threw touchdown passes as a wide receiver in the Fresno State and Nevada.
Charles was a two-time all-conference wide receiver at Citrus College (Coach John Rome) who averaged 20.5 yards per catch during his junior college career. In 1999, Charles ranked 13th in receiving yards per game and 28th in pass receptions among California Community College players with 44 receptions for 860 yards and nine touchdowns. As a freshman, he caught 34 passes for 736 yards and six touchdowns.
Pauley graduated from Duarte (Calif.) High School lettered in football (Coach James Harden), basketball and track and field. He was a first-team all-league grid choice as a senior. He also was a first-team all-league guard in basketball. He enjoys motion picture comedies and lists Chris Tucker and Tom Hanks as his favorite comedians. Pauley's closest friend on the team is Willie Adams, whom he has known since high school. Charles was born in Sun Valley, Calif., on February 23, 1980.
