The Women of Sparta Golf Tournament, an annual fundraiser for women’s athletics, met its goal of netting $50,000 towards women in sports at San Jose State University. The 2003 event was successful due to the dedication of the honorary chairperson, Carolyn Lewis, and over 20 dedicated volunteers.
San Jose City Council Members Pat Dando (District 10), Linda J. Le Zotte (District 1), Cindy Chavez (District 3), Ken Yeager (District 6) and David D. Cortese (District 8) were welcome participants it the 2003 event.
The Women of Sparta raised an additional $10,000+ toward a bronze patina of “Meet the Challenge” and a permanent recognition of Carolyn’s legacy to be placed on south campus. Significant contributors to this effort were Enide Allison, Marshal Rosenthal, The Tower Energy Group and Nu-Gina Rogers.
Each person participating in the tournament raised $500 to play and many contributed additional funds through the event’s silent auction. The 2003 event was held at the Villages Golf and Country Club.
The Spartan Foundation serves as the host of the Women of Sparta and the majority of the funds raised go to student-athlete athletic scholarships.
