Coming back from an injury-plagued 2001 season, Carlos hopes to regain the form that was good enough to be a starting cornerback occasionally in 1999 and 2000. The fifth-year Spartan missed last season due to injuries and was not available for 2002 spring practice. In 2000, he played in nine of the team's 12 games and was credited with 15 tackles, a fumble recovery and a pass break up.

As a freshman, he was credited with 18 tackles and a quarterback sack. Koustas, whose freshman season was interrupted by shoulder problems, also had the Spartans' longest interception return in 1999 with a 35-yard run against Tulsa.

Koustas came to San Jose State after receiving honorable mention All-San Francisco Metro-area honors at San Francisco's Riordan High School (Coach Ken Peralta) and redshirted the 1998 season. The three-sport letterwinner also lettered in basketball and was a league champion sprinter on the track and field team. Koustas enjoys portrait drawing and was his high school football team's barber. He shares the Spartans' barber duties with teammate Shaun Fletcher. Carlos was born in San Diego, Calif., on March 15, 1980.
