Josh is a safety prospect joining the Spartans this fall. "I got mentally tougher. Now, when I watched a game, I understand more of the little things than I did before," said Powell, who was enrolled at SJSU last year. A three-sport letterwinner at Ridgeview High School in Bakersfield, Calif., Powell played free safety, outside linebacker and running back. As a senior (Coach Bill Richardson), he was credited with 81 tackles, four pass break ups and three interceptions. He rushed for 548 yards on 83 carries and scored two touchdowns. Powell also caught 23 passes for 389 yards and four touchdowns in 2000. He was his team's "Most Valuable Player," a first-team all-league and second-team all-area choice. Powell also lettered in basketball and was a high jumper on the track and field team. He was a participant in Bakersfield's "Friday Night Live" community service program that discourages drug and alcohol abuse. Josh, a Bakersfield native, was born on August 16, 1983.
