Ninety-two (92) current and former San Jose State University student-athletes can participate in the University’s commencement and department convocation ceremonies taking place May 22-25. San Jose State University’s annual Commencement ceremony is in Spartan Stadium, May 24, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Students who received a baccalaureate or master’s degree from San Jose State during the 2007 summer and fall terms or anticipate receiving the degree upon completion of the spring semester may participate in the Commencement that annually confers academic degrees to 6,000 students and attracts 20,000-plus friends and family members.
“San Jose State athletics congratulates the student-athletes, coaches and staff members who earned either a bachelor’s or master’s degree last summer or fall, those who are only a few days away from accomplishing the same and those who are eligible to participate in the University’s Commencement ceremony,” says Tom Bowen, director of athletics, who also references 16 current and/or former coaches or staff members completing their current educational objective. “We are proud of their academic accomplishments and achievements to date, thank them for their athletics participation and wish them the best as they move on to the next stage in their life.
“Our department also thanks and salutes the professors, instructors, counselors and tutors who have educated and guided our student-athletes academically to this point in their lives. In 2008, we have a 20 percent increase year-over-year in the number of student-athletes who can participate in the ceremony.”
Football has the most student-athletes listed in the University’s 2008 Commencement booklet with 29, the most in any singular academic year for the program and more than 30 percent of the department’s total of 92. Baseball is another sports program with a double-figure total 13.
At the May 24 Commencement ceremony, outgoing University President Don W. Kassing will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters in recognition of his profound contributions to San Jose State for 15 years including the last four as President. Upon his appointment as president, Kassing made judicious changes in the senior management team, led campus-wide Vision 2010 strategic planning, strongly supported improved services for students, established open and meaningful communications with faculty, stabilized funding for athletics, and catalyzed dramatic increases in private fundraising, with a record-breaking $50.5 million garnered in 2006-2007.
