MORAGA, Calif—A nine run second inning helped the San Jose State University baseball team win, 13-5, against Saint Mary’s Louis Guisto Field Saturday afternoon. The game was the second win in the three game opening series against the Gaels.

The Spartans (2-0) hit three consecutive doubles with one out in the inning to take a 9-0 lead early in the game. The Gaels (0-2) sophomore pitcher Kevin Trochez gave up six runs on six hits and lasted only 1 1/3 innings before being pulled.

Senior center fielder Dino Quintero led the Spartan offense going 2-for-4 at the plate, two walks and three RBI including a two run double in the second. Junior Mike Malott pitched five innings and earned his first win of the season allowing four runs on seven hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

“We did a lot better at the plate today,” said Spartan head coach Sam Piraro. “We were able to get a lot of two strike hits and move the runners around the bases.”

Senior catcher Adam Shorsher batted in the first run of the game with a one out single in the top of the second. Freshman Travis Becktel, Quintero and senior Gabe Lopez hit consecutive doubles scoring four of the nine Spartan runs.

Sophomore Kevin Frandsen made his first start in left field this season and made made three clutch catches despite a sun drenched outfield. Quintero and Becktel also played the outfield well, with just one error against Becktel despite hard hit balls into the bright outfield all afternoon.

The teams will finish the three-game series in San Jose on Sunday afternoon at Blethen Field with the first pitch at 1:00 p.m.
