BAWSI: "Go Girl Go"
Sep.- Nov. 2006
The Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative (BAWSI) is a public benefit, nonprofit organization with a mission to create programs and partnerships through which female athletes bring health, hope and wholeness to elementary age girls within the community. The purpose for this after school program, "Go Girl Go", is to get elementary school girls moving, to shape their attitudes towards exercise, and to create a culture where girls highly value their well being. BAWSI will run two, eight-week "Go Girl Go" sessions during the school year-one starting in the fall and the second in the spring.
This fall, San Jose State Athletics and BAWSI have teamed together to launch the BAWSI after-school program. Members from the softball team will meet every Tuesday starting in September at Goss Elementary in San Jose from 3:15 to 4:30 pm; and members from the women's basketball team meet every Wednesday at Horace Mann Elementary School in San Jose.
A 75 minute program is split up into five sections. Each section lasts for about 10 minutes and includes activities such as a five key word exercise (words such as leadership, respect, and values), nutrition exercises, and physical activity games. One of the main goals for this program is to encourage a 1,000 step goal that each girl is expected to meet; the girls are given a pedometer at the beginning of each meeting to keep track of their steps.
"I believe this is a great experience" Lorena Martinez, team lead and softball athlete from San Jose State University's softball team, "not only for us but for the young girls who are participating...I'm glad we are able to help out the girls in this community."
The program started September 26 and will run till November 21.
