COMMUNITY RELATIONS  BAWSI - Spring Program

The Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative (BAWSI) is a public benefit, nonprofit organization with a mission to create programs and partnerships though which women athletes bring health, hope and wholeness to our community. The purpose for this after school program, “Go Girl Go”, is to get elementary school girls moving, shape attitudes toward exercise, and create a culture where girls highly value their well being. BAWSI will run two, eight-week “Go Girl Go” sessions during the school year one beginning in the spring and one in the fall.

This spring, San Jose State Athletics and BAWSI have teamed up together to launch the BAWSI after-school program.

Swimming & diving team meet every Wednesday at Dahl Elementary School in San Jose for 8 weeks. (March 14 May 2)

Members from gymnastics team support Lowell Elementary School students once a week for four weeks. (April 19 May 10)

A 75 minute program is split up into five sections. Each section last for about 10 minutes and includes activities such as a five key word exercise (word such as leadership, respect and values are discussed in small groups), nutrition exercises, and physical activity games. Highlights from the programs is a 1,000 step goal each student is expected to meet (they are given pedometers to count their steps) and the singing of the BAWSI song sung during every meeting.
