The defense continued to progress keepng the offense from scoring on the first eight possessions during the second San Jose State University spring football scrimmage.

Overall, the defense stopped the offense 12 times in the 17-series scrimmage on the football practice field. Though the offense ended up scoring five times, three of the five touchdowns occurred when the offense started its series from either the 5 or 25-yard lines of the defense.

The defense, which came up with an interception by safety Gerald Jones and three quarterback sacks, allowed the offense to gain 288 yards on 77 plays.

Senior Marcus Arroyo led the offense to its first score – a 2-yard run by sophomore tailback Clarence Cunningham. Junior college transfer Scott Rislov led the offense on its only other long scoring drive culminated by a 4-yard pass to senior wide receiver Charles Pauley.

Pauley, the scrimmage’s leading receiver with five receptions for 60 yards, and Rislov connected one more time on an 8-yard touchdown when the ball was placed on the defense’s 25-yard line.

Sophomore Lance Martin and redshirt junior Debin Cowell each scored on short runs during the goal-line situations. Martin, who had the scrimmage's longest run of 22 yards, was the top rusher for the second straight scrimmage with 83 yards on 15 carries.

Spring practice resumes Monday morning and concludes with the annual Spring Game, Saturday, April 27, at 10:00 a.m. on the football practice field.
