San Jose, Calif.-----Eighty-eight San Jose State University student-athletes were honored at the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics 17th annual Arm & Pat Hanzad Academic Awards ceremony. This year’s ceremony was presented by The Order of Sparta, San Jose State University’s former athletes organization.
Student-athletes qualified for recognition based on a 3.00 grade-point average on a 4.00 scale. Approximately 22 percent of San Jose State University’s 400-person student-athlete population met the minimum criteria for "Scholar-Athlete" recognition.
For the second year in a row, quarterback Scott Rislov, a psychology major, was named the top male "Scholar-Athlete." Cross country runner Ashleigh Nebeker was named the top female "Scholar-Athlete."
Women’s soccer player Christina Morrison received the Arm & Pat Hanzad "Most Improved" award. Two-time Western Athletic Conference diving champion Tracy Harkins and Melisa Scheele received the Order of Sparta "Academic Excellence" award given to students who have seven or more semesters of achieving a 3.00 grade-point average.
Rislov, Nebeker, Scheele, gymnasts Rebecca Ronzio and Adriane Mertens and women’s cross country runner Tabitha Guzman were recognized as Dean’s List Scholar-Athletes for achieving a 3.65 grade-point average for at least two consecutive semesters.
Scott Niheu of baseball, Brett Lilly of men’s basketball, Teoma Taylor of women’s basketball, Bryan Hilberg of men’s cross country, Nebeker, Rislov, men’s golfer Isaac Weintraub, women’s golfer Lani Wong, Ronzio, Richard Halvorsen of men’s soccer,, women’s soccer player Alison Jablonsky, softball player Shannon Anderson, Harkins, tennis player Elke Harms, Brooke Herald of volleyball and Laura Scott of women’s water polo were named to the all-academic team as the student-athletes with the highest grade-point average on their respective teams.
