Five Spartans named Arthur Ashe Jr., Sports Scholars Awards Winners
Five student-athletes at San Jose State University -- Ryanne Banks, Tanika Byrd, Diana Lilly, Natasha Johnson and Ana Martinez, have been named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Awards winners.
Banks, who is majoring in sociology, was a second-team honoree in women's soccer. A junior, she has a 3.3 GPA and is an SJSU Scholar-Athlete.
Byrd, a speech major with a 3.3 GPA, completed her eligibility in gymnastics last season. A first-team selection for the award, she is an SJSU Scholar-Athlete.
Lilly, a first baseman/outfielder on the Spartan softball team, was a first team selection. A junior majoring in business administration, Lilly carries a 3.7 GPA and is an SJSU Scholar-Athlete.
Johnson, who graduated from San Jose State in June, was a fourth team pick. A member of the women's basketball team, Johnson had a 3.3 GPA in Human Performance and was a four-year SJSU Scholar-Athlete and a two-time Western Athletic Conference all-academic selection.
Martinez, a sophomore, has a 3.5 GPA and has not declared a major. An SJSU Scholar-Athlete, she is a member of the women's cross country team.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher (4.0 scale), must have completed one academic year, must be an active member of an intercollegiate athletic team during the 1999-2000 year, and must have a demonstrated record of service to the campus or community.
