Former Spartan Athletics Director To Be Honored At NACDA Convention
Former San Jose State AD Chuck Bell will be inducted in the NACDA Hall of Fame on Wednesday.
Former San Jose State athletics director Chuck Bell is one of 12 directors of athletics who will be inducted into the National Associate of Collegiate Directors of America (NACDA) Hall of Fame Wednesday afternoon at the organization’s 45th Annual Convention in Anaheim, Calif.
Bell led the Spartan Athletics Department from March 1998 to December 1, 2004. Under his leadership, the department maintained full compliance with gender equity requirements and graduation rates remained consistently above those for the general student body. Buildings and areas constructed during his tenure included the Koret Athletic Training Center, Scott Gadway Academic Center, the Jeff Garcia Hall of Champions and the Spartan statues.
Prior to his stint at San Jose State, Bell was the director of athletics at Utah State from 1992-98. He helped the Aggies fully comply with Title IX requirements and saw the graduation rate for his student-athletes rise to 78 percent. Under his leadership, Bell helped to establish the women’s soccer program at the school, and the soccer stadium was renamed the “Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field” in 2002.
Bell served on NACDA’s Executive Committee (1999-2000, 1995-98) and was on the Directors’ Cup Committee from 1998-2007. He also served on the National Football Board of Directors and the Division IA Athletic Directors’ Association Executive Committee.
Bell joins two other San Jose State Athletics Directors in the Hall of Fame – Bob Bronzan (1960-72) and Dr. John Caine (1972-76). Bronzan was honored by NACDA with the Merit Award and the James J. Corbett Memorial Award.
