Former Spartans Carlos And Smith Honored At ESPYs
Former San Jose State track and field athletes John Carlos and Tommie Smith have been honored with the Arthur Ashe Award at the ESPYs, with the first airing coming Sunday, July 20.
Los Angeles, Calif. - Former San Jose State track and field athletes John Carlos and Tommie Smith have been honored with the Arthur Ashe Award at the 2008 ESPY Awards.
Smith and Carlos were recognized for taking a stand for civil rights during the medal ceremony after capturing gold and bronze, respectively, in the 200 meters at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games. A statue immortalizing the moment was unveiled on the San Jose State campus three years ago.
The 16th annual ESPYs, honoring the year's best athletes and moments, was originally taped at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday night, July 17, with the first television airing coming Sunday, July 20, at 6:00 p.m. PDT on ESPN. Subsequent airings are scheduled for 9:00 p.m. PDT later Sunday, and 12:00 a.m. PDT early Monday, also on ESPN.
