Gary Mano begins his sixth season with the San Josi State University women's volleyball coaching staff. Mano was promoted to associate head coach last season after serving as the top assistant for five years.
Gary Mano begins his sixth season with the San Jos State University women’s volleyball coaching staff. Mano was promoted to associate head coach last season after serving as the top assistant for five years.
His coaching responsibilities include team defense, setters and match preparation. Mano serves as the recruiting coordinator and camp director plus has marketing and administrative duties.
In addition to his San Jos State coaching duties, Mano founded the Spartan Volleyball Club. The club is a joint effort between the San Jos State volleyball program, Baden and adidas. Founded in February of 1998, the club provides quality coaching and training to local girls who do not have the
opportunity to play club volleyball.
Mano also assists in coordinating various community service projects for the Spartan volleyball team. Over the past four years, the team has picked oranges for the Second Harvest Food Bank, sorted clothes and food for the Sacred Heart Community Center, fed the homeless in Las Vegas for Thanksgiving and run clinics for area youth.
Outside of Spartan volleyball, Mano coaches Club Yahoo!, a 12 and under volleyball club in the South Bay. This past summer, the team won a bronze medal at the Junior Olympics in Salt Lake City. They placed first in Northern California Volleyball Association and at the Far Western Regionals. Last year’s team won every competition in the 12 and under category during the winter and spring and won a bronze medal at the 2000 Junior Olympics in Louisville, Ky.
Mano came to San Jos State from the South Point Volleyball Club in Lehi, Utah. He founded the youth volleyball club in 1995 and served as director and coach for the 16 and 18-year-old age groups. Mano coached the Salty Sport Volleyball Club in Utah for the 1994 and 1995 club seasons.
The Spartan assistant began his collegiate coaching career in 1985 as an assistant coach for the Brigham Young University men’s volleyball team. He assumed the duties of the general manager of the BYU men’s volleyball program in 1989 and retained those duties through the 1992 season.
The 1992 graduate of Brigham Young University majored in international marketing. He was a former vice-president and member of the board of directors of the Lehi, Utah Chamber of Commerce. Mano graduated from Amador Valley High School in 1985, where, as a senior, he coached the high school girls junior varsity team.
A native of Pleasanton, Calif., Mano received his MBA from San Jos State in 1999. He resides in San Jose.
