Griegos Team Behind the Team - Great Go For Spartans
Third in a series; featuring true heroes of the Spartan Foundation Annual Scholarship Fund Drive
This week’s spotlight shines on a Spartan Foundation Annual Scholarship Fund Drive couple who prove every day that you don’t have to be San JosState alums to be incredibly passionate about Spartan Athletics. Joe and LouAnn Griego have been active in all things Spartan since the Elway era, when Joe got a look at Jack’s wide-open style of football and was hooked. While coaches, administrators, and student-athletes have come and gone over the last 30 years, the Griego’s Spartan tailgate banner continues to fly proudly.
Before retiring, Joe managed projects for Ford Aerospace while LouAnn managed all the Spartan Foundation’s special events including auctions. If you’re talking with Joe about his professional life and want to have some fun, ask him how he liked living in Houston. And if you’re talking to LouAnn about her time running the Spartan Foundation auction and want to have some fun, ask her what her nickname was at that time.
Devoted Spartan football, basketball, and baseball fans, the Griego’s are ubiquitous. In addition to enjoying a suite at Spartan Stadium, they’ve attended zillions of away football games. They’re always in the stands at the EventCenter for both men’s and women’s games. LouAnn is also the unofficial baseball scorekeeper in the Spartan Foundation section at Muni. Want to know the count? Speaking of the count, Joe and LouAnn have put up some pretty impressive numbers over their many years of fundraising for student-athlete scholarships. And you can always count on them when and where they’re needed. Both have invested years of service on the Spartan Foundation Board of Directors, where LouAnn still serves. Joe served as president of the Quarterback Club. When Sparta calls, they answer...it’s no wonder the Griego’s count their Spartan friends and family in the hundreds.
